BA(Hons)
Video Games Design
Combine visual-art theory with extensive development training to create, code and release your own games and digital assets throughout your studies.
This course provides an opportunity for students to develop as industry-oriented computer games designers. It combines theoretical grounding in visual art and media theory with all the practical hands-on experience you need to pursue a career in industry. Students will design, create, code and release their own games and digital assets throughout their studies and as an integral part of their programme.
The course will give you exposure to the industry through expert guest lectures and participation in national industry events.
The course’s design is a careful blend of onsite and electronic teaching to support students whose artistic practice does not always fit with “nine-to-five” ways of working.
The course will give you an understanding of traditional and more contemporary modes of game design, develop your visual design abilities, enhance your coding and general production standards, as well as help you become adept at using critical evaluative techniques to develop your own work and—crucially—support your peers to success.

All hardware and software need for the course will be usable on site, however you may wish to have access to certain systems off site for self-directed study. The key pieces are: a computer which can run the game engine of your choice, a portable hard drive to store your work (these vary in size and price but are approximately 1TB at £40), a USB controller, this will let you test games with another input device, a wired xbox 360 controller is recommended as they are very versatile, approximate price is £18, Photoshop - this is an industry standard piece of software which we are hoping to support students with offsite but currently do not. For access Photoshop is £19.97/mo but there are others suitable for the course such as Clip Studio Paint (£39 one-time purchase) and Gimp (free).
Course trips run 2 or 3 times every year. While these are sometimes module specific, they are optional. Local trips to galleries and agencies cost usually range from between £40-50. The course has the potential to run an international trip that is also optional.
We also encourage our students to attend games industry conferences such as Eurogamer, Rezzed, Feral Vector and the Norwich Games Festival, costs depend on type of tickets, length, and location of the events.
