Tim Foddy: ‘Go for it, you’ll have the time of your life. I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.’

Tell us about your course. What are you particularly enjoying about it?

I’m enjoying the ethics module at the moment. It encourages debate and discussion – and I love hearing the different perspectives. I’m not always right! I’ve felt really welcomed onto this course, regardless of my age (I’m actually older than my lecturer!). But I’ve been wholly accepted, and it feels good to be able to pass on some of my knowledge and experience.

What made you decide on this particular course?

Foolishly, I thought it would be a subject where I could apply my existing knowledge... I was wrong there!

What made you decide on University Studies?

The experience of the tutor was a major part – and the fact that they are always available for support. And it’s so close, I didn’t want to travel. Also, because it’s smaller you really get the chance to know your tutors and classmates.

How do you feel US supports you in your studies?

I know that the support is all here if I ever needed to ask for it, and that feels very comforting.

What are you most proud of on your US journey so far?

Putting the assignments in, making the grades – that I’ve got this far. Going back into education in my 60’s hasn’t been exactly easy, but It’s given me a real sense of purpose, a reason to get out of bed. It’s taught me that I still have something to offer and that I’m up for the challenge. That’s really rewarding and gives you a feeling of self-worth.

What’s the one biggest thing you’ve learned at US so far?

That people are willing to accept you regardless of age or anything else. I feel like I’ve been accepted for who I am and what I can offer. I’ve learnt a lot about myself, and I’ve learnt how to become more accepting of other people’s experience and opinion.

What do you plan to do after graduating?

I want to volunteer for a charity like Rural England or the RSPB – I’m a bit of an eco-warrior!

How will US help you achieve those goals?

I’d love to be able to put my business skills to the test and campaign on ecological issues.

If you could sum up the US experience in three words, what would they be?

Do. It. Again!

If a friend was thinking of studying at US, how would you persuade them to enrol?

Go for it, you’ll have the time of your life. I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.
