Mark Wickenden: ‘Do it now. Don’t over think it – you could miss the greatest opportunity of your life.’

Tell us about your course. What are you particularly enjoying about it?

I’ve found something I enjoy, and I want to pursue it. And what my tutor doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing, and you get so much support. Everything is broken down and explained in a way that’s understandable. They use lots of different teaching methods, lectures and open forums making it really accessible and enjoyable.

The course is full of like-minded people, both students and staff – everyone is here to help you achieve your goal. If you’re willing to put in the hard work and effort, your tutors will match it.

What made you decide on this particular course?

The course gives me a different perspective on things. It’s multi-discipline and gives such a broad understanding; HR, marketing, employment law... this gives you so many more options for your career.

What made you decide on University Studies?

I did an Access Business course here and my tutor spotted my potential. They told me that if I passed that they would guarantee me a place on the degree. I’ve never experienced someone having so much faith in me.

How do you think it’s different to other places?

You get so much one-to-one time with your tutor because of the small class sizes, it’s a more personalised experience. The age range on the course is 18 to 60, so you can draw upon all those different life experiences within the group.

How do you feel US supports you in your studies?

It’s the best learning support I’ve ever received, I’ll always remember and be thankful for it. I have cerebral palsy and I’m not naturally academic but the support from the university has helped me push myself outside of my comfort zone, that feels amazing and like I can achieve anything.

What are you most proud of on your US journey so far?

That I’m still here! It hasn’t been easy but all I need to do is remind myself about the end goal. I’m investing in myself.

What’s the one biggest thing you’ve learned at US so far?

That I’m more capable than I know. Cerebral palsy doesn’t define me, I have a growth mindset. I might need support, but I’ve found here that if you ask for help, people are always happy to meet you halfway.

What do you plan to do after graduating?

I’d like to start a career in marketing.

If you could sum up the US experience in three words, what would they be?

 Brilliant, worthwhile, rewarding.

If a friend was thinking of studying at US, how would you persuade them to enrol?

Do it now. Don’t over think it – you could miss the greatest opportunity of your life.
