College chief doffs cap to ‘inspirational’ students during 2022 graduation
A packed St Edmundsbury Cathedral saw over 100 students gain higher education qualifications at the 2022 University Studies at West Suffolk College graduation ceremony.
The occasion took place on Saturday 9 October.
A total of 133 students graduated in a range of subjects and courses – 43 with first class honours and 27 gained either an HND or HNC qualification.
Dr Nikos Savvas, CEO of the Eastern Colleges Group (which includes West Suffolk College, Abbeygate Sixth Form and One Sixth Form and University Studies at West Suffolk College), said: “These students are incredible, and they should be applauded for their talents, dedication, and resilience. They truly deserve the accolades and praise that they receive.
“I found talking to the students about their next steps and plans inspiring. They are individuals who want to go on and help others, support our community, and create opportunity – and the qualifications, connections, and character strengths that they have worked tirelessly to gain will be a fantastic platform for them to open doors with.
“Education really is one of the best investments in yourself that you can make. I was humbled to be able to celebrate such a milestone day with the Class of 2022.”
During the ceremonies, Dr Nikos Savvas and Yvonne Mason OBE from the Mason Trust gave speeches. The degrees were conferred by Tim Greenacre, the Chief Operating Officer of the University of Suffolk (UoS) and professor Zoe Butterfint, the Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor of Partnerships and Apprenticeships at the University of East Anglia (UEA).
Dr Elspeth Lees, Executive Dean of University Studies at West Suffolk College said: “It’s always an emotional time to see our students proudly step up to receive their degrees amidst the backdrop of our glorious Cathedral. A huge congratulations to everyone.”
After the ceremony, guests and graduates mingled with staff, friends and families amidst the historic grounds of the Cathedral.
In addition to students receiving their scrolls, six prizes were awarded to students who were nominated by tutors for their outstanding achievements during their studies. The prizes were as follows. Amy Volkert: business and humanities student of the year. Colleen Wright: most improved student of the year. David Csontos: creative technologies student of the year.
Eleanor Scholes: health and human sciences student of the year. Joseph Winters: rising star award. Matthew Childs: engineering and construction student of the year award.
All higher education qualifications are accredited by the UEA and UoS.
