Have you ever wondered about going to university?

We don’t necessarily mean living in student halls and partying for 3 years but working towards a qualification that can help you secure that dream job and make your career goals come true.

Whatever your age or background, University Studies at West Suffolk College is here to help you on to the next step of your learning journey with an Access to Higher Education course.

What if I’ve been out of learning for a long time?

By enrolling on one of our Access to Higher Education Courses you will learn how to approach being a student and the different techniques you’ll need to be successful in your studies. The content of the course is designed to ensure you are fully equipped to study at degree level.

Is there just one Access to HE course?

Access to Higher Education comes in all different shapes and sizes. We have a variety of different pathways that will help set you up for your chosen degree programme. Our courses cover the following subject areas:

  • Business Management

  • Counselling

  • Engineering

  • Healthcare Professionals

  • Humanities

  • Policing

  • Science

  • Social Sciences

How long will it take me to complete an Access course?

Our courses run from September to June and most require you to be on campus for two set days per week, which should help with juggling work and family commitments.

What will I have to pay for my studies?

The cost of an Access to Higher Education course can be funded via the Advanced Learner Loan. If you go on to complete a full degree, this cost will be wiped, and you will have received the Access qualification for free. If you choose not to complete a full degree, then you will only begin to repay the cost once you earn over a certain amount. Further information can be found here: Advanced Learner Loan - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

What if I do not meet the entry requirements?

If you are concerned that you are missing a qualification, please do not worry, our friendly Careers Advice and Guidance team can support you in finding one of West Suffolk College’s many Adult Education courses, ranging from Functional Skills and ESOL to GCSE Maths and English. Both face to face and online courses are available to gain that qualification and support you in your application.

I’m nervous to start learning again, is there support available to me?

Many people are nervous to start an Access to Higher Education or degree course, especially if they haven’t been in the classroom for some time. But please do not worry, we have an excellent wrap-around support network in the form of our Student Hub who will be able to support you every step of the way.
