Liam’s Story
Painting and decorator looking to climb the business ladder after securing top honours degree.
Liam Collis gained a first class honours degree from the University of Suffolk at West Suffolk College this year.
The Haverhill resident was ‘over the moon’ and ‘speechless’ when he heard the news.
Originally starting out on a traditional further educational course at West Suffolk College after school, Liam then moved onto a degree programme in 2018.
After gaining an 80% mark in his final dissertation, he secured the top grade possible on a BA (Hons) in Business and Management programme.
Since completing his course, the 22 year old has set up his own painting and decorating business called Collis and Co (https://www.facebook.com/collisandcompany).
On setting up his business, he said: “I’m really busy at the moment. I’m hoping to employ someone in the future and I might take on an apprentice from the college.
On the graduation ceremony, he said: “I went along to the ceremony with my mum and girlfriend and I’m proud of myself. This whole degree has made me want to keep learning. For example, I’ve just started a carpentry course at the college.”
Liam’s personal support tutor, Sarah Ellison, said: “Liam has overcome many barriers by working hard. I'm very proud of him."
His lecturer, Penny Stevens, said: "Liam's determination and dedication to learning was exceptional throughout the three years of his course.”
