Kirsty’s Story
From hating school to becoming a lecturer – mum of three gains first class degree after going back into education after a 30-year break.
A 52-year-old mum of three who went back into education as a way of boosting her self-esteem gained a first class combined English and Psychology (Hons) degree in 2020 with the University of Suffolk at West Suffolk College.
Kirsty Kerr from Bury came to Suffolk as an eight-year-old but mostly ‘hated’ school.
She left secondary education at the age of 16 and went into a series of ‘not very exciting office jobs’ before getting married and having children.
She got back into education in 2016/17 as a way of proving to herself that she ‘wasn’t stupid’ – by starting an access to higher education course in Bury.
Five years on – and after gaining top marks in her degree – as well as a PGCE, Kirsty has just been given a job teaching English at the place where she used to study.
She said: “It was scary going back into education. But, I quickly made friends and after gaining distinction grades in the first part of my access course, my confidence grew. I was inspired.”
On hearing the news about her degree, she said: “When I discovered I got a first in my degree I cried. I couldn't quite believe it.
And what do her three children think?
“They're very proud" and said, ‘we always knew you would do it’ (get a first).
“At the moment, one of my daughters is studying for her A-levels in Cambridge and she is keen to go to university. I think my passion for studying has encouraged her.”
Since finishing her studies, Kirsty has become an Adult GCSE English and Functional Skills lecturer at West Suffolk College and is enjoying her role.
On teaching, she said: "That sense of achievement carries on by helping others on their educational journeys; my hope is to build their confidence and inspire them.”
And what would Kirsty say to others about going back into education after 30 years away from it?
“I'd say don't let negative experiences of school define who you are. If you go back to education as a mature student, life experiences can be a benefit and you are there because you want to be – that makes it easier to learn and the experience much more enjoyable. And it's never too late – find a course, there are loads out there.”
