Matthew Childs – BENG (Hons) Engineering Mechatronics

Matt hopes to launch space career after gaining first class degree

24 year old Matt Childs from Saffron Walden has just completed a BENG (Hons) in Engineering Mechatronics.

Matt completed his degree alongside his day job working for Marshall Aerospace in Cambridge and has enjoyed the challenge of mixing study with employment.

Matt said: “I was at University Studies at West Suffolk College for four years in total. It has been challenging – but ultimately it’s been a really good time where I was able to broaden my academic knowledge.

“I recently received a letter about my graduation ceremony and I was delighted to find out I’d won a special prize and have been named engineering and construction student of the year.

“I produced everything to the best standard I could and to be recognised for that effort is something I wasn’t expecting.

“I was delighted to gain first class honours and I want to keep developing academically.

“I’d say to other students that to get the most out of university, you need to put in the effort, care and attention in to your work.

“In terms of the future, whilst I’m happy where I am, I’ve always had a fascination with the space industry, so that is something I’d like to explore. One of life’s mottos is that you should shoot for the moon. I’ll certainly be doing that in terms of my career.”
